Where sky meets stone – the speaking mountains of Bucegi

High in the Bucegi Mountains, where clouds play with light and the wind writes poetry on the grass, two iconic figures rise: The Heroes’ Cross on Caraiman and The Bucegi Sphinx. The cross, a steel silhouette standing at 2291 meters, watches over the Prahova Valley in memory of the 30,000 Romanian soldiers who fell in World War I. Built between 1924 and 1928, it holds the Guinness World Record as the tallest cross placed on a mountain peak.

The Sphinx, carved by wind and time, resembles a mythological figure gazing eternally into the horizon. While science explains it as differential erosion, legend claims it’s the face of a Dacian god — guardian of the mountains and the Romanian spirit. Alongside the Babele rock formations, these landmarks form part of a classic Bucegi trail, starting from Piatra Arsă and crossing the high plateau in a spectacle of nature and history.
